Places to Eat

For a town with a permanent population of less than 7000, Whitianga punches well above its weight when it comes to food. There are dozens of cafes and restaurants to choose from, from buzzing beachside bistros to authentic Asian eats. Here are some of our favourites…

Lukes Kitchen

20 Black Jack Road, Kūaotunu
This place isn’t technically in Whitianga, but it's only a 20-minute drive away (and a scenic one at that!) Lukes has become a bit of a coromandel institution, known for its laid-back beachside vibe, tasty wood-fired pizzas, and cold brews. The menu includes plates like ceviche, wraps, and mussel pots alongside the deliciously fresh handmade pizzas. There’s live music here regularly too—so if you like a bit of entertainment with your meal, keep an eye on their Instagram!

Salt Restaurant and Bar

1 Blacksmith Lane, Whitianga
If you fancy an evening cocktail overlooking the marina, there’s no better place to visit than Salt. Sit outside on the deck under one of the shady umbrellas and enjoy some drinks, tapas or a three-course meal. Salt is one of those rare venues that’s known for its superior food and service but relaxed enough for you to bring the kids along too. The menu has something for everyone—think seafood, platters, sharing plates, fresh salads and juicy steaks.

Snapper Jack’s

26 Albert Street, Whitianga
No visit to the beach is complete without at least one serving of fresh fish and chips. And Whitianga’s Snapper Jack’s is the place to get it! Situated in prime position on the main drag, you can’t miss the bright blue storefront on the corner of Albert and Monk Streets. In addition to all your usual favourites you’ll find a great selection of burgers and meal deals. Pick it up and enjoy your meal here on Buffalo Beach!

Blue Ginger

1/10 Blacksmith Lane, Whitianga
Open from Monday to Saturday from 4.30-8.30 pm, Blue Ginger has become a favourite among Whitianga locals and a must-visit for visitors. The casual eatery describes itself as offering ‘Asian Pacifica Fusion’... So what does this look like in terms of the menu? Think of dishes like smoked kahawai wontons, Indonesian beef rendang and Vietnamese noodle bowls. Blue Ginger doesn’t take reservations and it fills up fast, so best to arrive early to secure yourself a spot!

The Fig

41 Albert Street, Whitianga
Looking for great place for breakfast or brunch? The French Fig has got you covered! Known for its fabulous cabinet food as well as it’s a la carte menu, there’s no better place to start your day. Enjoy piping hot coffee, French toast, bacon and eggs, creamy mushrooms or your choice of eggs benedict. One of the best places in Whitianga for breakfast, hands down!
